San Piero

2nd March 2007 Disposal

Based on a report filed by the Carabinieri of the San Piero a Sieve station, Lt. Peccianti’s Army artificers from Bologna arrived in the Mugello on March 2, 2007, to safely dispose of a few WWII battle relics. Accompanying the Carabinieri and the Army detail along the dirt roads and into the woods in the San Piero area were an Ambulance and a few of us from the GoticaToscana staff.

The recovered ordnance consisted of two very badly corroded US WWII M6 bazooka rockets.

Having selected a suitable place to dispose of the rockets, the artificers dug out a fougasse for burying them.

The rockets are prepared for being detonated by an explosive charge. The area is cleared of all bystanders in a radius of a few hundred yards.

After the explosion, the effective destruction of the rockets is carefully checked.

This is just an example of the correct procedure to follow when finding any kind of suspect ordnance and of the SOP for disposing of dangerous explosives.
